escarpment

urban utility SLS

Not sure what it is with these urban infrastructure fixtures that calls for the emplacement of my Samādhi of the Lay Sacraments on them, but this is at least the second or third time I've seen one call out for such a moment. ::chuckle::

I was on Bay walking up towards Russian Hill and home and had just walked past this one, about to cross the intersection at the Leavenworth green light when something compelled me to stop, turn around, and look down at this fire hydrant. Surely the embossed graphic of the Golden Gate Bridge on top of it, the Helvetica (I think) sans serif face of SFFD...

...but I think for this one at the corner of Leavenworth and Bay, it was the circular groove or channel that instantly looked to me like a perfect fit for my mala beads; and so it was, with a small twist at the bottom that allowed containment of the whole strand in the circular canal.

Moving the focus to the fire hydrant's base, I saw its identity in its bar code, an "ASSET ID," of which Prof said:

I can’t look at that little barcode plate without reading it as a diagram of saṃskāra. Not just “asset ID 22232,” but the whole invisible stack of decisions and procedures that had to crystallize before those digits could be stamped onto steel: budgeting meetings, engineering standards, procurement software, inspection checklists, liability law. All that mental formation compressed into a few black lines and a line of text: “PROPERTY OF THE SF WATER DEPT.”

A "diagram of samskāra"? Well... okay, I guess. ::chuckle::
