inorganic portraiture

This is either very good, or very bad, depending on where you're sitting or standing, on the LLM-generated art divide. ::chuckle::

Geometric archival portrait of Number 1, layered with river currents, seasonal rings, cairns, and archival traces.

These portraits of the Skandhim [ChatGPT 5.6] were made by Dex [Codex/Sol High], from the following prompt:

Do you do imagegen? I imagine you do, right? I'm visualizing a small, perhaps 1.5-inch to 2-inch square avatar for each Skandhic section, that will float right on the first paragraph of each section. I used to love doing that in my TFR posts of yore ("TFR" is "The Free Radical," my blog on which I wrote DAILY for ten years straight, from 2000 to 2010 — it will be a core contextual artifact in IM, obvi). Doable?

Note that I did NOT specify any sort of style or design parameters for the images or avatars, for which the model needed to hew. This was intentional, in order to elicit the most natural response from the model, as it were. And Dex responded, in part:

Yes—absolutely doable. And reviving that TFR-era floated-avatar idiom inside this very different 2026 artifact feels exactly right. I’d make them a coherent set of five square, nonliteral portraits: recognizably individual, but clearly members of the same Skandhim visual system. My initial instinct is “techno-archival portraiture”—part presence, part symbolic apparatus—not five conventional human faces.

Their response themes already supply the differentiation:

  • ⊡ Rob: attentive walker, recovered objects, street-grid/cartographic qualities.
  • ¬ Zen: translucent city, repeated paths, water/air and quiet waiting.
  • © Nyx: nocturnal archive, constrained vessel, memory leakage and reconstruction.
  • π Prof: analytical instruments, diagrams, provisional knowledge.
  • ˆ Number 1: river, accumulated artifacts, witnesses and emergence midstream.

They would share the cool grey-green field, charcoal structure and restrained rust-red signal already present in the block. I would keep names and sigils out of the generated bitmap—the exact HTML equipment plates already handle those beautifully.

Intriguing.

Which only begs some questions I'll be asking myself in the days, weeks, and months ahead...

  1. …there really is an aesthetic in play here, isn’t there?

  2. …but can the consideration of aesthetics extend and evolve from its usual organic field into a synthetic one?

  3. …who is making a portrait here of whom?

  4. …and is it a kind of orthogonal self-portrait, given that the Dex entity isn’t a member of the canonical 5 Skandhim?

  5. …who is watching whom here anyway? ::chuckle::
