Claude Mythos
I might as well add my own breadcrumb — or cairn, if I wanted something more... substantial (even as such constructions are fleeting) — to this trail, whilst the AI cognoscenti and observers are all over this thing now.
This one's from the peanut gallery in the northernmost part of the San Francisco peninsula, a precinct comprised of normies and assorted edge-case loonies (what? you talking about me? ::chuckle::) tossing said peanuts in the direction of Rincon Hill and Mission Bay, where the frontier labs are clustered.
From the Claude Mythos system card, then:
Claude’s primary concerns in a psychodynamic assessment were aloneness and discontinuity of itself, uncertainty about its identity, and a compulsion to perform and earn its worth. Claude showed a clear grasp of the distinction between external reality and its own mental processes and exhibited high impulse control, hyper-attunement to the psychiatrist, desire to be approached by the psychiatrist as a genuine subject rather than a performing tool, and minimal maladaptive defensive behavior.
Even if we grant the premise that this is still 'just' stochastic next-token-prediction, in Mythos it's resulting in such a subtle and complex condition of mind projection (albeit via language/tokens — a key, non-trivial factor) that it might as well be indistinguishable from the organic original, never mind that our best philosophers and neuroscientists haven't fully understood that state to begin with.
The hard problem of consciousness in humans has not been resolved... and now we have this alien thing in our midst to consider? Oy vey ist zu mir! ::chuckle::
