a dream of 3 birds

During Sleep 2 last night (wherein I was doing a biphasic sleep), I had this dream sometime around 5 a.m., and got up to write it down...

we are picnicking with family and friends at a long wooden picnic table near a beach.

then, these three birds — vertically entangled in a thin chain — gently float down over to us, and I say to someone, "hey we should free them!" and I reach for it, as it had fluttered over to me. i see they are connected to the chain by their legs and claws.

the first is a large raptor, i easily unchain it and it flies away; the second is a mid-size seagull, and also easily take the chain off its leg; the last one is the smallest, a brown bird; they all fly away happily, the moment they are free.

after this, without a word i walk over to the rocky beach nearby where some boys are playing and making a sort of fort on the smooth rocks by the water; i ask them "is this your house?" one of them says yes. i walk further down to the water and waves to look, and it occurs to me that i want to go for a swim and freedive; i walk on the rocks back to the sandy part of the beach, where a fisherman and his little son are setting up; i kick off my slippers, and walk back onto the rocky beach and slip into the water, looking down at the depths; after a bit, i feel the powerful undercurrent taking me out to sea, and so i turn around and swim back against that strong current, freediving once to look at what's down there.

the water is clear, and i can see the incoming current and let a wave helpfully wash me back up to the rocky beach, where i find my slippers near the fisherman; i say thank you to him for some reason, and he says something kind to me in return, and i make my way back up to where the picnic is.

as i walk back i realize i have my wired earbuds in my left shorts pocket all this while and i worry that i had damaged them when i went swimming/diving. i take them out and put them on and am surprised to hear music emerging from it but my phone is not with me, and i am relieved it still worked. then the music stops (as if i had walked away from the music source) and put the earphones back in my pocket.

I am not sure what it all means; particularly the symbol of the vertically enchained birds, struggling but easily freed, as if they had come to us (humans) knowingly. Why vertically chained? Why 3, and from large to small?
