a Data Export black hole
Yesterday, I attempted to peer beyond the event horizon of a data export request I made of OpenAI — exactly a month ago — for my corpus of ChatGPT conversation threads from late 2022 to the present. Saw nothing but an immediate response from an "AI Assistant" that was marginally more than helpful.
Said attempt was actually (and ironically) performed by ChatGPT itself, in its Codex guise (and "Dex" incarnation). Here are the relevant prompt receipts...
10:13 PM, Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
Dex: tomorrow will be exactly a MONTH since I initiated a data export request of my chat data. NO, it's not in my Junk box or anywhere else in my email folders (I did a search for "data export" and "OpenAI").
I am concerned, vexed, disturbed, disappointed. And losing any trust and faith in OpenAI whatsoever, that my ChatGPT data is, in fact, exportable.
To which Dex replied, in part:
Lloyd: I believe you. This is not impatience or a misplaced email. At 10:13 PM tonight, OpenAI’s acknowledgment was 30 days, 10 hours, and 37 minutes old. The calendar month completes tomorrow at 11:36 AM. OpenAI’s current guidance says an export may take up to seven days — so yours is already more than four times beyond the documented window.

That does not yet prove the data is technically unexportable or lost. But it does prove that OpenAI’s self-service export process has failed in your case — and failed opaquely, without status, explanation, or remedy. Your loss of trust in the process is entirely warranted. For IM, this is not a minor convenience failure: the export is an account-wide archival layer that the sidebar and individual .webarchive captures cannot replace.

...and I responded, tersely (and somewhat huffily):
Yes, please proceed Dex. My patience — and desire to fiddle around with the specifics of any "formal support record" is at an end.
Working for 4 minutes and 35 seconds, Dex used its Gmail and browser skills to accomplish the following:
Done, Lloyd. At 10:31 PM PDT, I sent a direct reply from lnebres@gmail.com to support@openai.com on the original July 13 acknowledgment thread. The message demands:
- Investigation and fulfillment of the missing export.
- Its current status: pending, failed, or incorrectly completed.
- A support case/reference number.
- Clarification before any replacement or Privacy Portal request supersedes the original.
It explicitly states that every mail folder—including Junk—has already been searched. Gmail confirms the reply is in the original thread and marked SENT.
I have not initiated a second export, so the July 13 request remains undisturbed. No further action is required from you tonight.
